Verb + Ing (enjoy doing / stop doing etc) and Verb + to.. (decide to... / forget to.. etc)

53.1 Complete the sentences for each situation using -ing.

1. A : What shall we do?
    B : We could go to the zoo.
     -> She suggested going to the zoo
2. A : Do you want to play tennis?
    B : No, not really.
     -> He didn't fancy playing tennis
3. A : You were driving too fast.
    B : You're right. Sorry!
     -> She admitted driving too fast
4. A : Let's go swimming.
    B : Good idea!
     -> She suggesed going for a swim
5. A : You broke the DVD player.
    B : No, I didn't!
     -> He denied breaking the DVD player
6. A : Can you wait a few minutes?
    B : Sure, no problem.
    -> They didn't mind waiting a few minutes

53.2 Complete each sentences with one of the following verbs (in the correct form)

1. He tried to avoid answering my question.
2. Could you please stop making so much noise?

4. I considered applying for the job, but in the end I decided against it.
5. Have you finished reading the newspaper yet?

53.4 Use your own ideas to complete these sentences. Use -ing.

1. She's a very interesting person. I always enjoy working with her.
2. I'm not felling very well. I don't fancy playing anything.
3. I'm afraid there aren't any chairs. I hope you don't mind booking one for me.
4. It was a beautiful day, so I suggested playing with my friend.
5. It was very funny. I couldn't stop laughing all day long.
6. My car isn't very reliable. It keeps being broken.

54.1 Complete the sentences for these situations.

1. A : Shall we get married?
    B : Yes, let's.
    -> They decided to get married.
2. A : Please help me.
    B : OK.
    -> She agreed to help him.
3. A : Can I carry your bag for you?
    B : No, thanks. I can manage.
    -> He offered to carry her bag.
4. A : Let's meet at 8 o'clock.
    B : OK, fine.
    -> He arranged to meet at 8 o'clock.
5. A : What's your name?
    B :  I'm not going to tell you.
    -> She refused to tell her name.
6. A : Please don't tell anyone.
     B: I won't promise.
    -> She promised to not tell anyone.

54.2 Complete each sentence with a suitable verb.

1. Don't forget to lock the door when you go out.
2. There was a lot of traffic, but we managed to get to the airport in time.
3. We couldn't afford to live in London. It's too expensive.
4. We've got new computer software in our office. I haven't learn to use it yet.
5. Mark doesn't know what happened. I decided not to tell him.

54.3 Put the verb into the correct form, to ... or -ing. (See Unit 53 for verbs + -ing)

4. I've been invited to the party, but I haven't decided whether to go or not.
5. My room is very untidy. I've got so many things and I don't know where to put them.
6. I have some clothes to wash. Can you show me how to use the washing machine?
